That dress is still the centre of attention this morning. The number of views on buzzfeed.com has now passed 28 million and the debate continues through the social media.
Actually, it should now be a discussion not a debate. We now know that the actual dress is blue and black but the photograph posted on the web (above) has distorted it just enough for people to perceive it differently. Most people, it appears, see the dress in the photo as white and gold.
The reason, vision experts say, lies in our brains. We simply perceive colours differently in certain situations. Lighting and background colours can make a big difference. Our brains adjust as conditions change, but obviously not in the same way for everyone.

It all began when Scottish musician Catlin McNeill asked for help on the blogging website Tumblr. It seems he and his friends couldn't agree on the colours in the dress in this photo.
“guys please help me — is this dress white and gold, or blue and black? Me and my friends can’t agree and we are freaking the f*** out.”
It seems like a silly question because the dress is clearly blue and black.
It's not?
You say it's white and gold?
Are you crazy?
A heated debate followed on social media sites throughout the world. It soon became obvious that people were seeing different colours and they couldn't understand how others couldn't see what they saw?
The popular website Buzzfeed took up the story and asked its readers to help solve the puzzle. 21 million views later, the discussion is still going on. Here are some examples:
